III. Description

T. occidentalis (American arborvitae, Eastern arborvitae, White cedar). Slowgrowing conifer with a narrow crown.
Has orange-brown bark and flat sprays of scalelike, yellowish-green leaves, pale
or grayish-green beneath, smelling of apples when crushed. Ovoid cones are yellow-green, ripening to brown

This is a high maintenance tree that will require regular care and upkeep. Best with some sun, protect from drying winds.

IV. Planting & Care

The American Pillar Arborvitae can be planted in any soil or air condition, but it needs to be placed in a spot that receives full sun. Plant in a hole twice as wide, but just as deep as the root ball. There is no need to amend the soil. Water thoroughly after planting to establish roots. You can add a small wire fence if you want to block access for a dog or small animal. This fence will be invisible after a few years, because the tree will effectively work as a fence once it reaches maturity.

Watering: This tree can tolerate wet or dry conditions. Be sure to water the tree weekly in its young life to ensure proper growth. Try to maintain even moisture for the first year.

Maintenance: This tree does not require any pruning, fertilizing or pest or disease management. If you want to reduce the size, you can prune off the top once it reaches over 10 ft. This will stunt the growth and allow you to customize your screen size.
